Are you looking for an affordable digital piano that offers the best quality within a limited budget? You're in the right place! At Piano’s Maene, we understand that choosing the right piano can be a tough decision, especially when you're working with a budget. That's why we've thoroughly tested and compared three popular portable models in the budget-friendly category: the Roland FP-10, the Yamaha P-145, and the Doutreligne MSP-150.

In this blog, we’ll break down the strengths and weaknesses of each model to help you make an informed choice. We’ll also offer advice on which piano is the best fit for your needs and budget.

Speakers and amplification

Speakers and amplification

The built-in speakers of a digital piano play a crucial role in sound quality. They convert electronic signals into piano sounds, and the amplification and size of these speakers determine how full and rich the sound will ultimately be. Stage pianos with better amplification deliver a more powerful and realistic sound that closely mimics a real acoustic piano. In this price range, the speakers are often the weaker point, as they tend to have a small diameter and low power.

The Yamaha P-145 (2 x 7W speakers) and the Roland FP-10 (2 x 6W speakers) offer decent sound, but their amplification is somewhat limited. The Doutreligne MSP-150 stands out in this category with its powerful 25W speakers, an advanced European DSP chip, and samples from renowned concert grands. The MSP-150 delivers an unmatched sound experience. In its price range, it’s the closest you’ll get to the sound of a real acoustic piano.

Polyphony

Polyphony: How many notes can be played at once?

Polyphony refers to the number of notes a digital piano can play at once, meaning how many notes the piano can "produce" simultaneously without earlier notes being cut off. This is an important aspect of sound quality, especially when using the sustain pedal (which makes the notes ring longer), playing more complex music, or using both hands. With lower polyphony, notes can quickly drop off if you're playing many chords or fast passages. This can be especially frustrating when playing in higher registers or using the pedals, as the notes won’t sustain properly. Higher polyphony allows the piano to play more notes at once, making the playing experience feel more realistic and smooth.

The Yamaha P-145 scores fairly low with only 64 voices of polyphony. The Roland FP-10 performs slightly better with 96 voices, but it’s still quite limited. The Doutreligne MSP-150 clearly stands out here with an impressive 162 voices of polyphony. With Roland and Yamaha, you’ll find this level of polyphony only in their more expensive models, which are often twice the price.

Keyboard

Keyboard

All three models come with a weighted keyboard and 88 keys, which is essential for developing the right playing technique and expression. The closer the keyboard mimics the feel of a real acoustic piano, the better the playing experience will be.

The Roland FP-10 features the PHA-4 keyboard, which you’ll also find in Roland’s mid-range home pianos. It offers an excellent playing experience that’s very close to that of an acoustic piano. The Doutreligne MSP-150 offers a similar level of quality with its Grand Response Hammer Action keyboard, which also includes let-off, providing a more authentic key release feel. The Yamaha P-145 has the Graded Hammer Compact keyboard, which feels a bit less realistic than the other two. It also lacks the let-off feature, which makes a noticeable difference in the playing experience. For the best playing feel, the Roland FP-10 and Doutreligne MSP-150 are quite comparable. With either model, you’re making a great choice!

Extras

Additional features and connectivity options

Are you someone who loves experimenting with different instrumental sounds? Then the Doutreligne MSP-150 is your perfect match. With a total of 26 different sounds, this model offers versatility that’s hard to find elsewhere. For comparison, the Roland FP-10 has 15 sounds, and the Yamaha P-145 only has 10.

The Doutreligne MSP-150 doesn’t just excel in sound variety; it also stands out for its functionality. Thanks to its built-in Line Out, you can easily connect the instrument to external speakers—perfect for live performances or larger spaces! This option is missing from both the Roland FP-10 and Yamaha P-145, and you’ll only find it in their more expensive models.

All three models feature a USB-to-host connection, but the Doutreligne MSP-150 goes a step further with MIDI IN/OUT ports. This allows you to connect your digital piano to other devices, such as synthesizers, sound modules, or a computer, offering more sounds and recording options. It provides flexibility for music production, live performances, and controlling or playing other MIDI devices. The Roland FP-10 also features Bluetooth MIDI, allowing you to connect wirelessly to a tablet or smartphone.

Portable piano triple pedal

All three models come with a single pedal that functions as a sustain pedal, similar to what you’d find on an acoustic piano. However, with the Roland and Yamaha, a footswitch is included as standard instead of a full pedal. You can, of course, purchase a proper pedal separately, but that will increase the overall cost.

If you’d like to upgrade your digital piano to a full pedal set with three pedals, just like a real piano, you’re in luck with the Doutreligne MSP-150. It’s compatible with the Doutreligne MP-100 triple pedal. Unfortunately, such an upgrade isn’t possible with the Roland FP-10 and Yamaha P-145.
