In this blog, we answer five frequently asked questions about piano technique and maintenance. This way, you’ll learn not only why a piano has 88 keys and 3 pedals, but also how to tune the instrument, keep it clean, and protect it optimally from environmental factors.

1. Why does a piano have 88 keys and 3 pedals?

A modern piano typically has 88 keys, providing the full range of notes for both classical and contemporary music. The three pedals make the playing more expressive.

2. How often should a piano be tuned?

We recommend having an acoustic instrument tuned at least once a year. Since wood and strings react to changes in temperature and humidity, your piano may go out of tune. Tuning not only keeps your instrument in perfect pitch but also extends its lifespan. Digital pianos do not require tuning.

3. How important are humidity and temperature for my piano?

The ideal temperature for an acoustic piano is between 16°C and 24°C. If the temperature is too high or too low for an extended period, the piano may go out of tune slightly faster.

To preserve the piano's lifespan as much as possible, it is recommended to maintain the relative humidity between 40% and 60% in the room where the piano is located. In extreme conditions, an external humidifier can be used. Also, do not place the instrument next to a fireplace, heater, or in front of a window with direct sunlight.

4. How can I clean my piano?

The piano case can be cleaned using a microfiber cloth. For instruments with a high-gloss polyester finish, you can use a piano polish.

To clean the keyboard, you can use a slightly damp cloth. Make sure no water runs along the sides of the keys and dry them immediately afterward.

5. Is underfloor heating detrimental to my piano?

Underfloor heating has little or no impact on a modern piano. However, it may be useful to monitor the average temperature and humidity if the instrument is not placed in a standard living space.
