Recital Roel Dieltiens & Frank Braley

The name Auguste Franchomme may not immediately ring a bell for many people. It’s quite different with Frédéric Chopin. Yet these two musicians were close friends who deeply admired one another: one as a cellist, the other as a pianist. During their lifetimes, both enjoyed great fame as virtuosos and performed for sold‑out halls. They were also active as composers.

Chopin’s music remains vibrantly alive today, while Franchomme’s oeuvre unfortunately fell largely into oblivion after his death. And yet, in their time, they were almost inseparable. Chopin dedicated his Cello Sonata op. 65 — the last work published during his lifetime — to his friend.

This close bond is also audible in their music: Chopin’s style left a clear mark on Franchomme, whose works are characterised by the same lyrical melodies and a comparable, melancholic romanticism.

This concert places their remarkable friendship at the centre, with a programme built around two cello works by Chopin — the early Introduction et Polonaise brillante and the Sonata op. 65 — as well as Nocturnes by Franchomme (op. 14, 15 and 19).

Frank Braley performs on the 1836 Erard from the Chris Maene Collection.
