Designed by Steinway & Sons
Boston grand and upright pianos are fully designed by the engineers of Steinway & Sons in New York. Their craftsmanship and numerous patents have been directly applied to Boston, setting these instruments apart from all others in their class.
Each Boston piano is prepared at the Boston Quality Center, located near the Steinway factory in Hamburg, where experienced Steinway technicians spend hours on the final assembly and regulation steps to ensure every piano meets Steinway’s strict quality standards.
Duplex Scaling – richness of overtones
Every Boston grand is equipped with duplex scaling, one of Steinway’s most iconic inventions. This system, integrated into the cast-iron frame, generates a wide spectrum of overtones and ensures a full, balanced and long-lasting sound projection rarely found in this class.
Sitka spruce – the soul of the sound
The soundboard is crafted exclusively from high-quality Sitka spruce, selected for straight grain and a high density of annual rings. Based on a 1936 Steinway patent, the soundboard is tapered – thicker in the middle and thinner toward the edges. This design allows freer vibration, producing a powerful, singing and sustained tone.
Wide Tail Design – for a fuller and more powerful sound
Boston grands feature a wider tail, making both the soundboard and bass strings longer. As a result, a Boston GP-178 delivers the tonal volume of a 188 cm grand – more sound in a more compact size.
Playing feel based on Steinway action
Where other brands use plastic, Boston uses wood – just like Steinway. The Boston action is based on the geometry of the Steinway action and requires less energy to set the hammer in motion. The result:
- Perfect repetition
- Fast, responsive touch
- Greater control over a wide dynamic range
Every keystroke provides that typical Boston touch that inspires day after day.
Boston Performed Edition – enhanced quality
Since 2009, quality has been further refined with the Boston Performed Edition. Key innovations include:
- Inner and outer rim: outer rim made of mahogany layers, inner rim of maple – more stable and producing a more refined tone.
- Octagrip pinblock: exclusive to Boston, derived from Steinway’s Hexagrip, ensuring better tuning stability and durability.
Durability and reliability
Whether grand or upright, a Boston guarantees resonance, stability and sensitivity that last for years, even under intensive playing. With the Steinway Promise, you also have the assurance that your Boston retains its value: within 10 years of purchase, you receive 100% of the purchase price back if you upgrade to a Steinway. This way, you enjoy Boston quality today and can later move on without risk to the piano of your dreams: a true Steinway grand.
